Torture Survivors
Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT)
CCVT is a torture treatment agency in Toronto, Ontario. Services include mental health counselling, youth programs, public training, settlement services, and educational training in computer and language learning. The CCVT maintains a comprehensive website with access to readings and resources about the effects of torture and working with torture survivors.
Healing the Hurt
The U.S. Centre for Victims of Torture (CVT) provides resources for mental health providers including Webinars, evaluator training, publications, and other tools and links (http://www.healtorture.org/content/mental-health-resources). The CVT has developed a guide (in English and Korean) for practitioners working with torture survivors. This document is a primer and a multidisciplinary guide addressing needed considerations when working with this population. Field Manual on Rehabilitation of Torture Victims
This manual developed by Dignity: Danish Institute Against Torture (formerly the Rehabilitation & Research Centre for Torture Victims, RCT) gives practical recommendations for health workers at different skill levels to provide services for torture survivors and their families.
Istanbul Protocol
The Istanbul Protocol is a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights professional manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It provides relevant information on torture, legal investigation of torture, physical and psychological evidence of torture, the psychological/ psychiatric evaluation of torture in addition to other relevant international legal standards about torture.
