The Consortium for Organizational Mental Healthcare (COMH) is a collective of mental health researchers, consultants and practitioners with experience working with a range of public and private sector organizations. COMH is part of the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA; www.carmha.ca), a research centre within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. CARMHAS mandate is to conduct research that can be applied to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of mental health and addiction services in Canada.

The Centre offers information and resources on a wide range of mental health and substance use issues affecting children and youth in our province. These include, but are not limited to; depression, anxiety, attention deficit and behavioural problems, child/youth eating disorders and substance use. They also provide resources for adults with eating disorders.

Eating Disorders Meal Support: Helpful Approaches for Families in 4 languages! In addition to English, the Meal Support video is now available in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, and Korean.

Medications

Medical Education for Promoting Mental Wellness: A Guide for Young People and Those Who Care for Them (Med-Ed)

Med-Ed is a user-friendly document intended to educate adolescent patients and their caregivers about medications used in mental health care. The booklet includes a diary for recording medication names, dosages, and side-effects which helps users keep track of their medications and facilitates patient-caregiver communication.

Mental Health First-Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.

MHFA Canada, sponsored by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), offers a series of courses. Basic MHFA is a 12-hour training course delivered in 5 modules, carried out over 2 days. Participants learn how to provide initial help to people who are showing signs of a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This evidence-based program is being delivered in 20 countries across the world. The aim of the program is to provide the same overall purposes as traditional first aid – to ensure someone experiencing a health crisis has access to immediate and competent care . The program will teach you to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems; Provide initial help; Guide towards appropriate professional help. Aims to preserve life, prevent escalation of problems, promote recovery and comfort those experiencing mental health problems.
